A missing tooth in the front of your mouth can have a serious impact on the way you feel about your appearance, especially when you’re around other people. Missing teeth in other parts of your mouth might not be as noticeable, but it can affect your ability to talk clearly and chew. Dental implants provide you with a way to replace these teeth to improve your appearance and to help you chew and speak. Farshin Farokhian, DDS, offers dental implants for patients in the Hillcrest area of San Diego, California, who need to replace one or more teeth.

Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small posts made of titanium that go into your jawbone and fuse with it. These implants are designed to hold replacement teeth securely in your mouth without having any of the disadvantages of bridges or dentures, such as needing to be attached to nearby teeth or removed at times. They’re also a more comfortable option than dentures, and they provide you with a more natural appearance than other tooth replacement options. When your dental implants are firmly in place, Dr. Farokhian will attach a crown or artificial tooth to a connector on top of them.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

If you have missing teeth from injuries or advanced decay, you may be a good candidate for dental implants. You’ll need to have the right amount of bone and healthy tissue to ensure that your dental implants successfully fuse to your jawbone and heal without complications.

If you don’t have enough bone, Dr. Farokhian can use bone grafts to ensure that you do. Keep in mind that a good candidate also needs to be willing to wait several months to complete the entire dental implant process.

What can I expect from the dental implant process?

Dr. Farokhian will first put the dental implant into your jawbone. Once this post is in place, you’ll have to wait several weeks or even months until your jawbone fully heals and fuses with it. When this step is complete, Dr. Farokhian will attach a connector to your implant and place your crown or artificial tooth on top of it.

This whole process can take as long as nine months, depending on how much time your jawbone needs to heal. Dr. Farokhian can provide you with more detailed information on what to expect during the dental implant process.

Do my dental implants need any special care?

Your dental implants don’t require any special care, and they should last you for many years. You should make sure that you’re brushing and flossing to stop bacteria from building up on or around your artificial tooth or crown. If you have any problems with your dental implants, Dr. Farokhian can examine them for you and repair them as needed.
